The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has awarded the rights to América Móvil to broadcast the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, in 2014 and the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016.
IOC president Jacques Rogge said: “In 2016 the Olympic Games in Rio may be an important moment in Olympic history, and we’re more than happy to have reached this crucial agreement to make sure fans around the continent may be able to have the precise broadcast experience of the Games.”
América Móvil has acquired broadcast rights on all media platforms across Latin America.
IOC Finance Commission Chairman Richard Carrión, who led the negotiations, added: “We are delighted to have reached this agreement with América Móvil that is a brand new partner for the IOC.
“They demonstrated a transparent passion for the Olympic values and are keen on the Games coming to Latin America in 2016.
“The IOC negotiates broadcast rights on behalf of the Olympic Movement, and we believe it is a good deal for our stakeholders.
“The agreement ensures there’ll remain free Olympic Games television coverage across Latin America, but in addition allows viewers the selection of following the action on other media platforms to boot.”
